The computer game Equalize teaches children with diabetes to understand their disease in a fun and simple way. Equalize, developed by Know IT HT AB, won Svenska Designpriset 2010 in the category "Information web".
Equalize is developed by Know IT Hello There in Göteborg, for the pharmaceutical company Lilly. The games is inspired by platform games like Super Mario and Donkey Kong and provides a new interactive way to inform about type 1-diabetes while giving the player a fun experience. “Equalize” means to balance, which is what the point of the game is: To help children with diabetes understand the importance of keeping blood sugar levels steady.
– We are very proud to receive this award. Together with Lilly, we have created a game for a good purpose. Thousands of children and teenagers have already played. We are very pleased, says Oskar Eklund, head of Know IT HT AB.
Svenska Designpriset is one of Sweden’s most prestigious competitions in design and communication. A panel assess all the entries and selects nominees in four main categories: Editorial, Information, Identity and Advertisement.
The game will be available at clinics around the country and as an online game at www.equalize.se. Equalize will be launched in Sweden first, but the plan is that it can later be translated into other languages. The game was developed and tested by different groups consisting of children and diabetes specialists.
